It is back!!! After a long 3 year hiatus, Zumbaron Day has returned this year with over 50 flavours created especially for this special day.
We had the pleasure of tasting some of the unique macarons during the special preview held at Adriano Zumbo The Star Patisserie tonight:
Lolly Gobble Bliss Bombs – the classic 1970’s Australian caramel coated popcorn snacks. What is there not to love about the popcorn and caramel combo?
Strawberry & Watermelon (with black sesame “seeds”)
Laksa – Malaysian style laksa filling, do not let the idea deter you from trying this, it was actually tasty. The flavour was indeed true to its name, complete with dried shrimp and a kick from the chilli.
Red Skin , Gin & Tonic , Smoked Banana & Passionfruit – fans of the Red Skin chewy lollies would love this – delicate with a distinct raspberry flavour!
This year there are a handful of alcohol based Zumbaron flavours – Gin & Tonic is one of the two we previewed tonight. On Zumbaron Day you can expect to see Cosmopolitan, Red Bull & Vodka, Bloody Mary & Espresso Martini.
Thai Green Curry – we ventured back into South East Asia for flavour inspiration, everyone’s favourite Thai Green Curry. The flavour is quite subtle in comparison to the Laksa Zumbaron but that savoury sweet balance was spot on.
Raspberry, Lychee & Musk
Paris-brest – inspired by the French pastry of the same name – this was my favourite of the night. Delicious hazelnut ganache with a petit choux at the centre.
Fairy Bread – one festive looking Zumbaron and yes, it does taste like fairy bread!
Like previous Zumbaron Days, there will be a Live Kitchen where some (literally) hot Zumbaron flavours will be made to order.
At the deep fryer section tonight we had the creative genius Adriano Zumbo himself preparing some piping hot goodies!
Custard Fritter w/ Cinnamon & Apple Sauce – SOLD! Macaron coated in custard batter, deep fried, rolled in sugar and served with cinnamon apple sauce.
Brace yourself for the next one….
Epic Meal Time – this would be a perfect hangover food. You’ve got the grease, carb, salt and sugar – definitely will get you up and going in no time at all!
This creation is truly EPIC – sandwiched between the macaron shells are beef patty, chorizo, cheese, then wrap it in tortilla and the final wrapping of bacon before it goes into the deep fryer to transform into golden goodness. To top it up, a dollop of Jack Daniel’s mayonnaise.

- Melbournians – South Yarra Patisserie , 14 Claremont St, South Yarra (7am – 7pm)
